Application Developers Alliance Encourages Developers to Attend USPTO Roundtables

Washington, D.C. (January 7, 2013) – The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) announced two roundtable meetings on improving the software patent system. The meetings, which will be held at Stanford University on Tuesday, February 12 and at New York University on Wednesday, February 27, offer an opportunity for app developers and other stakeholders in the app ecosystem to provide feedback and insight on the software patent system.

The One Trillion Dollar Mark: Mobile Commerce Is Here to Stay

Each holiday season brings a new shopping trend–two years ago “Black Friday” started on Thursday, last year it was social shopping, and this year, mobile commerce takes the stage with no signs of becoming a one-season wonder. Instead of braving the lines for doorbusters on Black Friday, consumers increasingly made those first holiday purchases from their tablets with apps. Even on small business Saturday, an increasing number of stores were able to accommodate credit card payments with a smartphone or tablet app and a service like Intuit’s GoPayment.

App Developers and Consumer Groups Introduce App Transparency Screens

Washington, D.C. (November 30, 2012) – Today, the Application Developers Alliance along with the American Civil Liberties Union, Consumer Action, and World Privacy Forum announced the first joint industry-consumer proposal to improve and standardize apps’ communications with consumers regarding data that apps are collecting from users and sharing with third parties. The groups developed and presented standardized screens that, when displayed by apps, will inform users what data is being collected by an app with whom it is being shared. Additionally, the screens will link to more traditional “privacy policies,” which generally are very long legal documents that provide much more detail about why data is being used and how it is being secured.
