US Android Consumer Report
Study Surveyed 3,000 Android Users in the U.S. to Better Understand Consumer App Behavior

Washington, D.C. (21st November 2016) – The Developers Alliance today released a Report on Android Device Customization detailing how consumers organize the apps on their devices and use the more than 2 million apps available in the Google Play store. The Developers Alliance asked 3,000 Android users how they interact with their apps, which apps they use in major categories, and their behavior and attitudes towards customizing their devices.

“The Android marketplace is a growing, dynamic and competitive ecosystem that provides consumers more choices and variety than ever before,” said Jake Ward, President of the Developers Alliance. “There are numerous apps to choose from in almost every app category and an app for almost every need consumers may have, and if there are any unmet needs, developers are at the ready to create new innovative products to meet those needs.”

The report shows that customers highly value customization and the ability to make their devices their own. For example, nearly 90 percent of respondents reported making changes to the apps on their home screen and 66 percent populate their home screens with more apps they downloaded than apps preloaded on the device.  The report also found real diversity among the apps consumers use most often, with respondents reporting more than 2,000 unique apps on their home screens.

However, this does not mean users only want apps they have downloaded on their phone. An overwhelming majority, 76 percent, of consumers prefer to buy an Android device with basic apps already loaded.

The report also found that Android users do not exclusively use one app for a given task. A majority of users of almost every top app also use competing apps in the same category to complete similar tasks. For example, 75% of consumers use the Amazon app for shopping; however, 88% of those Amazon app users also use at least one other app for shopping. Similarly, 47% of Android consumers use Google Drive to store files, but 70% of those consumers also use another app such as DropBox or OneDrive.

“Consumers are taking full advantage of the competitive app marketplace to find the apps that work best for them,” added Ward. “This is the beauty of the Google Play Store and app marketplaces in general. Unlike traditional software, more than 2 million apps are available to consumers 24 hours a day, at the swipe of a thumb, regardless of the publisher or popularity.”
