The app ecosystem is large and growing, with more users and more apps added every day. Two-thirds of the U.S. online population has at least one smart mobile device, and 74 percent of those device owners have downloaded an app. In the next six months, about one-third of app users plan to use apps more than they do now, and one-third of non-users plan to start using apps.
Already, the app economy has created 519,000 jobs across the U.S., and this is just the beginning.

Washington, D.C. (November 12, 2012) – The 2012 presidential election was the first “app election,” according to research released today by the Application Developers Alliance. The pre-election survey, conducted by Frank N. Magid Associates, found that 85% of registered voters who are app users relied on an app to follow the campaigns and election. Moreover, a quarter of election app users indicated that the information they learned through apps helped them explore issues and decide on the best candidate.
Washington, D.C. (November 8, 2012) – Today, the Application Developers Alliance launched its Mobile Payments working group. The group, comprised of Alliance members, will shape Alliance programs, policies, and resources related to payments through mobile devices and in-app payment systems. Washington, D.C. (October 17, 2012) – Today, the Application Developers Alliance announced a partnership with venture fund Fortify.vc and its startup accelerator TheFort.vc. Under the agreement, companies in the Fortify.vc portfolio will receive full benefits of corporate membership in the Application Developers Alliance, including collaboration with the Alliance’s network of more than 15,000 application developers, event sponsorship opportunities, access to industry research, working group participation, and policy advocacy.
Washington, D.C. (October 17, 2012) – The Application Developers Alliance announced today that Joel Spolsky has been named Chairman of itsBoard of Directors. The 22 member Board unanimously elected Spolsky, a pioneer and thought leader in the developer community, to be its chairman. As Chairman, Spolsky will help to shape programming and policy initiatives for the Alliance and its more than 15,000 members. Spolsky is the co-founder of Fog Creek Software and the co-founder of Stack Exchange. His website “Joel on Software,” is read by developers around the world and translated into thirty languages.
Palo Alto, California (October 16, 2012) – The second annual Appbackr Napa App Retreat will be held November 2. Appbackr holds the retreat to bring together thought leaders in the app economy for one day of in-depth conversation about the future of apps.
Washington, D.C. (October 4, 2012) – The app economy has created 519,000 jobs nationwide and is a significant economic driver for a number of states, according to a study released today by CTIA-The Wireless Association® and the Application Developers Alliance. The report, entitled “The Geography of the App Economy,” also calculates the number of app economy jobs in each state, the “app intensity” (share of app economy jobs relative to overall jobs) and the economic impact for states. The research was conducted by Dr. Michael Mandel and Judith Scherer of South Mountain Economics, LLC.
