With over 100,000 visitors, and 2200 companies exhibiting across 110,000 square meters, it could be a challenge to get noticed at the world’s largest conference on all-things mobile: Mobile World Congress (MWC), hosted in Barcelona, Spain. With this years’ MWC theme perfectly reflecting the current state of the industry: “Mobile is Everything”, the centre stage for all app companies was the MWC’s App Planet, where 18 Alliance members were exhibiting their products and services, see which of our members were exhibiting here.
With expertise in both the public and private sectors, Representative Susan Brooks (R-Ind.) serves the public by promoting economic development, public safety, and homeland security in Congress. Recognizing the importance of technology and its role between these issues, Representative Brooks sponsored a law that reformed a Social Media Working Group in the Department of Homeland Security. The group brings experts from academia and the private sector together to improve social media techniques during emergencies for the benefit of American citizens. She is also a passionate advocate for computer science competency.
Washington, D.C. (February 17, 2016) – The below is a statement from Application Developers Alliance President and CEO Jake Ward in response to Federal District Court Judge Sheri Pym’s order that Apple provide the F.B.I. with access to Syed Rizwan Farook’s iPhone.
A U.S. magistrate judge has ordered Apple to build new software that would effectively weaken encryption security for the iPhone. Tim Cook responded in strong opposition to the order publicly and in a letter to his customers. The result is a showdown between a federal magistrate and one of America’s more innovative and trusted technology companies. The showdown has many practical implications, but also forces us to consider three essential questions as consumers, companies, and Americans: can weakening security make us more secure? How much intrusion and oversight are we willing to give the government in the name of protection? And, can the government make an American company build a product it doesn’t want to build?
Lanyards and name tags. Swags bags and pamphlets. Business cards and exhibitor booths. Ladies and gents, it’s conference season. And my personal favorite is fast approaching: GSMA’s Mobile World Congress.
Virginia Attorney General Mark Herring recently established the Patent Troll Unit, delivering another serious blow to “bad faith” claims of patent troll activity. These predatory practices stifle innovation and small business growth by abusing the U.S. patent system.
Small businesses and developers around the world are starting to breathe a little easier today. After working diligently over the last few months, EU and U.S. negotiators announced a new agreement on transatlantic data flows. Dubbed “Privacy Shield,” the agreement will ensure innovators can continue to create and improve life-changing products that benefit consumers in both the EU and U.S. While the agreement must still be ok’d by various EU bodies, the news of an initial agreement is an important development nonetheless.
On Tuesday, President Obama delivered his final State of the Union Address. After highlighting notable accomplishments over the past seven years in office, the president also presented his goals for his final year in office. Among the goals the he rattled off were things like college tuition reform, cancer research, tax cuts, regulation reform, and importantly, a redoubling of our efforts to train more computer-savvy kids. Said President Obama, “we should … offering every student the hands-on computer science and math classes that make them job-ready on day one and support more great teachers for our kids.”
Elected just three years ago, Representative Hakeem Jeffries (D, N.Y.) has already proven to be an effective voice for developers in Congress. Since arriving in Washington, Rep. He sits on the House Judiciary Committee as well as the House Education and Workforce Committee. In addition, he is a member of the International Anti-Piracy Caucus, co-chairs the bipartisan Intellectual Property Caucus, and serves as Whip of the Congressional Black Caucus.

“Government regulators have instead been slow, and at times outright reluctant, to embrace the flow of data.”
Former FTC Commissioner Joshua Wright said this in a recent speech on the FTC’s privacy regulation. In the same speech he observed that during his time at the Commission, the FTC was generally apprehensive “about the collection and use of data…along with a corresponding and arguably crippling fear about the possible misuse of such data.” This approach to privacy regulation is contradictory to what consumers and businesses expect from the exchange of data.
