BRUSSELS (26 September 2016) – Today, Eva Paunova MEP and the Application Developers Alliance, the trade association representing thousands of app developers and publishers worldwide, hosted the Tech Policy Roundtable “Competition and Innovation in the App Ecosystem”.
The European Commission is on the verge of releasing its Proposed Directive for new EU copyright rules. However, reaction to the leaked Proposed Directive have been not too enthusiastic. For many Commentators the Copyright reforms are severely lacking and are no where near what the European Commission promised.
On Tuesday 12 July, the EU and U.S. signed the long-awaited Privacy Shield Agreement. The agreement provides a clear set of rules for the U.S. companies and intelligence agencies with regard to the handling of EU citizens’ personal data.
The Alliance organised its fourth Tech Policy Roundtable on ‘EU Decision Making: Digital Tools for Citizens Engagement‘ that took place in the European Parliament. The Roundtable was co-hosted by S&D MEPs, Catherine Stihler and Victor Negrescu. The event allowed the 50+ guests to discuss the importance of civic tech and the obstacles facing the sector.
The DG CONNECT Privacy team is currently reviewing the e-Privacy Directive, and the public consultation closes in just one month (5th July). In order to find out more on the Directive, the Consultation and next steps, we had a conversation with Rosa Barcelo, Head of Unit Digital Privacy and Data Protection at European Commission, who is responsible for this file.

The EU Directive on certain aspects concerning contracts for the supply focusses on rights and obligations related to the integration of digital content, a broader definition of digital content, remedies and termination of contracts. In an effort to discuss the rules and implications further, the European Parliament’s Liberal (ALDE) group organised a hearing on the topic. Catriona Meehan represented the Alliance in the first panel, where she voiced the concerns of app developers and digital startups.
