On 6th October 2015 the CJEU invalidated the Safe Harbour agreement. This means that there is no longer a streamlined process for data flows across the Atlantic and each of the EU’s 28 Member State’s national Data Protection Authorities (DPAs) now have to evaluate individually if US companies match EU safety standards when dealing with personal data.
The European Code Week, which happens every year, aims to raise awareness about the importance of digital skills in different sectors of everyday life. The 2015 edition lasted from October 11 to October 18. We focused on e-Skills for small businesses, Apps and IoT, and programming for students. Have a look at our events!
The Apps Alliance, Dwengo and Google organized the workshop “How To Program A Robot: The EU Code Week Workshop For Students”, which took place on October 15 at the Google offices in Brussels. The initiative was part of the EU Code Week 2015.
On 15 October, the Apps Alliance organised a round table discussion on ‘eSkills for Small Businesses’ at the European Parliament in Brussels. The event was hosted by Amjad Bashir, MEP and a leader of the ECR working group for SMEs.

The Application Developers Alliance, together with more than 20 industry groups, sent a joint letter to European Commission President Juncker following the Court of Justice of the European Union’s (CJEU) recent invalidation of the EU Safe Harbour Decision.
App developers and their industry partners earned a major victory last week when California passed S.B. 178 the California Electronic Communications Privacy Act (CalECPA) into law. California becomes just one of three states to update its privacy laws to keep pace with dynamic and evolving technology.
Small digital businesses globally – including those based in Europe – have taken a hit today as the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) ruled that the EU/US 2000 Safe Harbour agreement is invalid. This decision, though it only directly impacts the parties to the case, calls into question the legality of any company storing or moving internationally the data of European citizens.
Recently, the Court of Justice of the European Union invalidated the 2000 U.S.-E.U. Safe Harbor agreement, creating needless fragmentation that will force American companies to comply with dozens of regulatory interpretations when handling E.U. citizens’ data. The Court’s decision makes it more difficult for American companies to do business across the Atlantic, and could slow job and economic growth here in the United States. Curiously, the ruling also runs counter to steps the European Commission and United States Congress are taking to close the gap in the global privacy arena.
The European Commission proposed a comprehensive revision of the Medical Device Directives and related legal framework, which is currently in the final stage of negotiations in trilogue between the Commission, Parliament and Member States.
On September 22, 2015, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce hosted a daylong discussion on the Internet of Things (IoT). Industry representatives, policymakers, and small businesses that are revolutionizing how we think about and use data attended the summit entitled The Internet of Everything: Data, Networks, & Opportunities. Given the Alliance’s recent release of its Developer Insights Report where many of our members flagged IoT as being the most exciting “next wave” of technology, the event’s timing was perfect.
In the software community, small businesses and innovative startups are far too familiar with patent trolls and their unscrupulous business model. Patent trolls are entities that don’t innovate, create, or otherwise contribute to our country’s growth. Instead they wield overly broad, never-should-have-been-issued patents to threaten litigation and extort settlement payments.
