The Applications Developers Alliance once again attended AppsWorld 2015 in London. As a conference focused on highlighting the trends, challenges, and opportunities in today’s mobile app ecosystem, it was a great opportunity to gain insights and advice for our developer community. At this gathering of over 10,000 app industry professionals, we interviewed three of our member companies, focusing on app monetization solutions and key upcoming trends for 2016. On Wednesday, 2 December, the Apps Alliance, with EU40, organised an interactive workshop in the European Parliament, hosted by Philippe de Backer MEP (ALDE, ITRE Committee).
The speakers and audience discussed the impact ICT and mobile technology has on the lives of people with disabilities. The main focus of the debate was the huge potential of apps dedicated to solving cognitive, motorial language, visual and auditory difficulties.
On Tuesday, the Judiciary Committee in the House of Representatives held an important legislative hearing to examine the Email Privacy Act (H.R. 699). H.R. 699 would update the Electronic Communications Privacy Act (ECPA) of 1986 to ensure that emails are treated like regular mail and the government cannot compel email services or other third-parties, such as cloud providers, to hand over emails or other documents without a warrant.

On Tuesday, 17 November, the Apps Alliance hosted its second European Parliament Round Table discussion with Heinz K. Becker MEP. The event focussed on the recent Safe Harbour ruling and its ‘Impact on SMEs and Digital Startups’. SMEs and startups represent more than 60% of companies that participated in the Safe Harbour agreement and they will be most heavily affected by its invalidation.
“There is no such thing as non-software company anymore,” states Geoff Hollingworth, Head of Product Marketing Cloud Infrastructure at Ericsson. “We are moving to digital world and the question that we all face is how do we build a ten times bigger economy?”
This week, the Application Developers Alliance joined large and small businesses to urge Congress to swiftly pass comprehensive patent reform legislation as part of the United for Patent Reform Coalition’s Fly-In.
As Chairman of the House Small Business Committee, Steve Chabot guides a committee focused on issues affecting Main Street businesses across America. Working tirelessly as advocates for entrepreneurs, Chairman Chabot and his committee handle a variety of issues including access to capital, healthcare, technology, and international trade – issues that are deeply personal to the more than 36,000 individual app developers and nearly 200 startups the Alliance represents. Chairman Chabot’s genial “can-do” attitude, coupled with his belief in nurturing small businesses and celebrating the entrepreneurial spirit, are what make him such an effective voice for developers in Congress.
The House of Representatives moved one step closer to repairing America’s image abroad regarding data privacy, by passing H.R. 1428, the Judicial Redress Act, with broad, bipartisan support. The Alliance applauds the bipartisan leadership in the House that shepherded H.R. 1428 across the finish line, and urges the Senate to quickly do the same.
