On 15 October, the Apps Alliance organised a round table discussion on ‘eSkills for Small Businesses’ at the European Parliament in Brussels. The event was hosted by Amjad Bashir, MEP and a leader of the ECR working group for SMEs.
The Apps Alliance, Dwengo and Google organised the workshop “How To Programme A Robot: The EU Code Week Workshop For Students”, which took place on 15th October at the Google offices in Brussels. The initiative was part of the Europe Code Week 2015.
Small digital businesses globally – including those based in Europe – have taken a hit today as the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) ruled that the EU/US 2000 Safe Harbour agreement is invalid. This decision, though it only directly impacts the parties to the case, calls into question the legality of any company storing or moving internationally the data of European citizens.
(Brussels, 6 October 2015) – In a blow to small digital businesses and in contrast to many efforts of the European Commission, the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) today ruled that the 2000 EU/US Data Protection Safe Harbour Agreement is invalid. The CJEU decision in the so-called “Schrems” case (C-362/14), comes as the EU has become increasingly critical of EU citizens’ data being transferred outside the EU.
Returning to the German capital, the Application Developers Alliance held our second App Strategy Workshop in Berlin. With more than 130 attendees, which included industry experts and startup founders alike,the event covered and engaged insight on entrepreneurship, localizing apps, user acquisition, app monetization, and much more.

The European Commission proposed a comprehensive revision of the Medical Device Directives and related legal framework, which is currently in the final stage of negotiations in trilogue between the Commission, Parliament and Member States.
On September 22, 2015, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce hosted a daylong discussion on the Internet of Things (IoT). Industry representatives, policymakers, and small businesses that are revolutionizing how we think about and use data attended the summit entitled The Internet of Everything: Data, Networks, & Opportunities. Given the Alliance’s recent release of its Developer Insights Report where many of our members flagged IoT as being the most exciting “next wave” of technology, the event’s timing was perfect.
In 2015 the Apps Alliance will produce 15 App Strategy Workshop – Fundamentals events across North America and Europe. Every event will include focused discussion about three key requirements of successful consumer-facing apps: discovery, user engagement and monetization. These topics have all been the subject of Apps Alliance White Papers and of discussion at many prior Alliance events.
Nearly four years ago Jake and I founded the Application Developers Alliance to support developers and promote their remarkable work. Gulfstream Telematics LLC (Colo.), LifeLine Response (Ill.), MobileTREC Corporation (Calif.), CarShield Services Inc. (Calif.),ICEdot (Okla.), and more than 40 other public safety providers sued by 911 Notify since 2013, connect the elderly, children and families to first responders and emergency contacts in the event of a life-threatening event.
