The Applications Developers Alliance once again attended AppsWorld 2015 in London. Email Privacy Act Deserves a Vote

On Tuesday, the Judiciary Committee in the House of Representatives held an important legislative hearing to examine the Email Privacy Act (H.R. 699). H.R. 699 would update the Electronic Communications Privacy Act (ECPA) of 1986 to ensure that emails are treated like regular mail and the government cannot compel email services or other third-parties, such as cloud providers, to hand over emails or other documents without a warrant.

Beltway Voices: A Conversation with Commissioner Terrell McSweeny of the Federal Trade Commission

As one of four Commissioners at the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), Terrell McSweeny plays an important role in protecting consumers.  Since being appointed as a Commissioner in April 2014, Commissioner McSweeny has already left her mark as a thoughtful policy leader on issues important to developers like data use and innovation, security, encryption, and the Internet of Things (IoT). Commissioner McSweeny’s deep policy experience, including as an advisor to President Obama and Vice President Biden on areas including innovation and intellectual property, make her uniquely suited for her role as Commissioner.

Beltway Voices: A Conversation With Chairman Steve Chabot

As Chairman of the House Small Business Committee, Steve Chabot guides a committee focused on issues affecting Main Street businesses across America.  Working tirelessly as advocates for entrepreneurs, Chairman Chabot and his committee handle a variety of issues including access to capital, healthcare, technology, and international trade – issues that are deeply personal to the more than 36,000 individual app developers and nearly 200 startups the Alliance represents.  Chairman Chabot’s genial “can-do” attitude, coupled with his belief in nurturing small businesses and celebrating the entrepreneurial spirit, are what make him such an effective voice for developers in Congress.

U.S. House Passes Judicial Redress Act, Senate Must Do the Same

The House of Representatives moved one step closer to repairing America’s image abroad regarding data privacy, by passing H.R. 1428, the Judicial Redress Act, with broad, bipartisan support. The Alliance applauds the bipartisan leadership in the House that shepherded H.R. 1428 across the finish line, and urges the Senate to quickly do the same.

Safe Harbour update

On 6th October 2015 the CJEU invalidated the Safe Harbour agreement. This means that there is no longer a streamlined process for data flows across the Atlantic and each of the EU’s 28 Member State’s national Data Protection Authorities (DPAs) now have to evaluate individually if US companies match EU safety standards when dealing with personal data.
