Application Developers Alliance Launches Kids and Education Working Group

Washington, D.C. (February 26, 2013) Today the Application Developers Alliance launched its Kids and Education working group. Comprised of Alliance members, the group’s goal is to create more and better opportunities for the development of apps for children, parents, and teachers.

The group is made up of award-winning leaders in children’s educational software and other stakeholders in the kids’ app ecosystem. Edmodo, one of the largest and fastest growing direct-to-teacher distribution channels, will serve as the group’s chair, and Chris Cwalina with Holland & Knight will serve as Secretary. The group’s initial members include: Animoca, Common Sense Media, ConferenceEdge, Corky Portwine, Filament Games, Flatter World, Johnson & Moo, KidsAndBeyond, LearnStreet, MindSmack Games, Ruckus Media Group, Virtual Nerd, and Willow Tree Apps.

“We’re incredibly excited to chair the Alliance’s Kids and Education working group. The working group will help create the tools and environment developers need to make great content for children. These efforts are well aligned with Edmodo’s longstanding efforts to integrate top quality content into the K-12 classroom,” said Emma Nothmann, Senior Director of National Alliances for Edmodo.

“We look forward to seeing what this group of industry leaders will accomplish in this challenging and rewarding field,” said Jon Potter, President of the Application Developers Alliance. “App developers nationwide are opening up new avenues for learning by creating engaging, fun, and educational content for kids, and the working group will help support these innovators.”

The group will support developers by creating tools and resources, authoring white papers, commissioning research, and collaborating on best practices related to expanding the kids’ educational app market. The group will also tackle policy challenges, including educating app developers about recent changes to the Federal Trade Commission’s rules implementing the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act, which go into effect on July 1.

The Application Developers Alliance working groups shape Alliance programs, policies, and resources. The Alliance has standing working groups focused on Business & Revenue, Emerging Technologies & Research, Health & Medical Apps, and Mobile Payments.
