Washington, D.C. (January 7, 2013) – The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) announced two roundtable meetings on improving the software patent system. The meetings, which will be held at Stanford University on Tuesday, February 12 and at New York University on Wednesday, February 27, offer an opportunity for app developers and other stakeholders in the app ecosystem to provide feedback and insight on the software patent system.
“Software patents present significant challenges for app developers, and we applaud the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for convening stakeholders to discuss how to overcome these challenges,” said Jon Potter, President of the Application Developers Alliance.
“Vague claims, product life cycles shorter than the PTO review process, patent trolls, and general uncertainty threaten to stifle app industry innovation. We encourage app developers to attend the roundtables in force to share their experiences. Making developers’ concerns known is an important first step toward addressing the problems with the current software patent system.”
