Washington, D.C. (April 30, 2013) – Today the Application Developers Alliance announced a slate of new companies added to its membership. New members include AppLift, Binary Formations, GP International, Qubop, Rackspace, SurDoc, and Sutro Software.
Alliance members have access to a network of more than 20,000 individual developers, over of 125 companies, and the DevsBuild. It resource center. Members also influence and guide Alliance advocacy efforts on behalf of the developer community. Rackspace is a national sponsor of the Developer Patent Summits, a fifteen-city tour convening developers, entrepreneurs, experts, and policy makers to discuss software patent challenges and ideas for reform.
“We’re thrilled that our new members are eager to join our advocacy efforts. Rackspace and Sutro Software have experience with the software patent system that will be valuable as we work toward reform that benefits developers and promotes innovation,” said Jon Potter, President of the Application Developers Alliance.
“It is difficult to write even the simplest program today without violating multiple dubious software patents,” said John Petersen, Sutro’s founder, “Programming is a new literacy. Programmers and writers can protect their written words via copyright. But imagine if writers were able to secure government monopolies on the ability to tell certain types of stories. How many great novels would be lost? Such are software patents. Programmers deserve the same freedoms as writers when we sit down to tell our stories in code. Sutro Software thanks the Application Developers Alliance for its work on this important issue.”
Members also have the opportunity to participate in Alliance working groups. Binary Formations will participate in the Alliance’s Emerging Technologies working group, and GP International will participate in the Alliance’s Health and Medical working group.
