WASHINGTON (April 21, 2025): Developers Alliance Board Chair Jake Ward comments on the Google Search case’s remedies hearing. Beginning today, U.S. District Court Judge Amit Mehta will hold a two-week hearing to decide the appropriate remedies in the United States v. Google LLC case.
“This case is about contracts. The DOJ’s proposed Android divestiture is not only unrelated, but also makes it clear that officials fail to understand how the app ecosystem operates and supports small developers.
“An independent Android will lack the resources to help small developers easily and inexpensively create, launch, and update apps, and consumers will lose access to Google’s strict safety guidelines that protect their information.
“We’ve seen this scenario before. Returning to the days before Google bought Android will recreate the interoperability issues and poor hardware distribution that plagued the early ecosystem, all while delivering complete market dominance to Apple.
“Judge Mehta must remember what this case is about and prevent the DOJ from breaking up a system that works so well for developers and consumers, just to satisfy large companies that fail to compete with Google’s Play Store.”
