Developers Alliance voices concerns over the AI Act but remains hopeful for significant improvements pre-law.
June 14, 2024 – The European Parliament has set out its position on the AI Act, which allowed the start of the negotiations with the Council of the EU.
Key Facts:
- The positions of the European Parliament and the Council of the EU differ significantly in many areas.
- The European Parliament’s additions to the AI Act make it more complex and may discourage advanced AI development in the EU. However, there are also amendments aimed at improving the legal framework.
- Advocates for the implementation of regulatory sandboxes as tangible means of supporting emerging businesses.
The following quote can be attributed to Karina Stan, Director of EU Policy of the Developers Alliance:
“The European Parliament’s position on the AI Act is a mixed bag. It departs, regrettably, from the risk-based product safety and technology-neutral approaches. It also promotes regulatory sandboxes as a real support for innovative companies, especially startups and SMEs, to find their way into the market. We call on the co-legislators to make efforts to provide a proportional and most of all, feasible framework for the development and deployment of AI in the EU.”
The following quote can be attributed to Bruce Gustafson, CEO of the Developers Alliance:
“There is little chance the international community will embrace the AI Act, which is just as well. Leading technology economies recognize that innovation must balance risks against rewards. This Act risks denying the citizens of the EU the immense benefits of a powerful technical tool that is already driving advances in health, science, and human welfare. We remain hopeful that the proposal will be significantly improved before it becomes law.”
