The twenty-three signees of the letter urge the U.S. and EU representatives to find a solution to the transatlantic data flow conundrum swiftly.
Washington D.C., Brussels, July 14th, 2021 – The Developers Alliance and twenty-two other leading transatlantic industry and business associations have sent a joint statement to U.S. Secretary of Commerce Raimondo and the European Commissioner for Justice Reynders. In their letter, the organizations note the anniversary of the Court of Justice of the European Union’s judgement which, among other things, invalidated the EU-U.S. Privacy Shield Framework.
The organizations welcome and appreciate the ongoing efforts to agree on a new, strengthened EU-U.S. framework for the transfer of personal information across the Atlantic, they express concern in the letter that the issue is not being addressed in a timely enough manner for the businesses that are endangered by the lack of frameworks.
“One year on, thousands of EU and U.S. companies continue to be impacted by the resulting legal uncertainty for transatlantic data transfers, restrictive interpretations of the ruling risk triggering additional compliance and operational challenges. They also restrict the opportunities for EU businesses to grow and innovate internationally, rely on the technology and services of their choosing, and to perform routine commercial data transfers.”
“Data flows should not stop at the geographical and political borders within the Western World,” stated Karina Stan, Director of EU Policy and Head of Brussels Office. ”We call on the EU and the US to find solid legal solutions to help businesses, including those of software developers, to continue to grow, innovate and collaborate at the transatlantic level.”
