The letter details five recommendations that should be considered by the EU policymakers before introducing new legislative proposals for AI.
Brussels, November 20, 2019 — The Developers Alliance has announced its signing of the Open Letter from Nordic Startups. It is addressed to European Commissioner for Competition and proposed Executive Vice President-Designate of the European Commission for “a Europe fit for the Digital Age”, Margrethe Vestager. The letter advocates for five recommendations. The recommendations are foundational tenets for establishing effective and appropriate framework for AI. They are designed for consideration by EU policymakers before introducing new legislative proposals for AI. The signing organizations hope that adherence to these recommendations will allow AI regulation to proceed without the possibility of it negatively impacting technological progress or the needs of developer businesses. The recommendations are as follows:
-
Europe needs a confident and positive AI vision.
-
Digital skills and learnings are vital for European AI success.
-
Create a truly digitised Single Market, integrated into the economy.
-
A smart, principle-based and flexible AI-framework.
-
Develop soft laws and flexible standards in partnership with industry.
“The developer community is calling on the European Union to embrace AI and to provide the appropriate environment for European innovators to stay and to thrive in the EU,” commented Karina Stan, Developers Alliance Director of EU Policy and Head of Brussels Office.
“Using techniques adapted from our very human decision and pattern detection abilities, millions of developers around the world are tackling previously intractable problems including understanding climate, building sustainable societies, and curing disease,” said Bruce Gustafson, CEO of the Developers Alliance. “The EU has the opportunity to establish itself as a leading voice in how best to capture the promise of AI, and the European developer community stands ready to assist by sharing our passion and experience with these incredible new tools.”
