It’s a Wrap! Enterprise Development Workshop Recap

What does this mean for the future of the global economy?

The Apps Alliance – in partnership with Intel, Ericsson and BlackBerry – recently completed a 3-city Enterprise Development Workshop series to explore innovative enterprise technologies, and address the challenges and opportunities for developers as a critical workforce.

The roadshow visited New York City, London, and San Francisco. The third and final workshop of the series took place in San Francisco on March 8, welcoming over 100 attendees. With standing room only, enterprise software developers, IT professionals, and executives across all industries gathered to hear industry experts discuss the future of the digital enterprise along with tools and solutions for cross-industry implementation. Afterward, attendees and speakers gathered to network over an open-bar and appetizers. 

Kicking-off the program was Jake Ward, President and CEO of the Apps Alliance, who announced the Alliance’s newest campaign, the Developer Workforce Initiative. He explained that “the Initiative is a global effort to increase the size, expertise, and understanding of this critical workforce.” As the first-of-its-kind, the Initiative is a campaign that will engage, educate, and support the world’s software developers everywhere – across all platforms, technologies, and industries. Ward then welcomed Delyn Simmons, Vice President of Developer Platform at Ionic Security, to the stage for a one-on-one conversation about emerging opportunities for developers. They explored the need for companies of every size to invest in their developers, their systems, and the strategic integration of new technologies. 

Next, Richard Schaefer, Senior Enterprise Solutions Manager at BlackBerry, discussed how enterprise developers can build secure mobile apps across platforms with end-to-end security. He addressed APIs, security enhancements, and mobile and platform services that add value to apps and user-experience while maintaining security.

Moving beyond mobile, Henry Stapp, Director of Product Management at Apcera, explored the promises of the cloud and how new technologies (containers, micro-services, etc.) enable unparalleled speed and flexibility. Stapp shared with attendees how enterprises can securely migrate to modern IT with complete confidence and trust using the Apcera platform.

Then, Chitti Nimmagadda, Senior Director of Network Virtualization at Ericsson, took the stage to give an in-depth introduction to Intel® Rack Scale Architecture and related management systems. He explored how using this technology enables accelerated service delivery through a composable software system delivering greater performance and increased utilization of compute, storage and network resources.

Diving deeper into enhancing performance for enterprise applications, David Stewart, Software Engineering Manager at Intel, revealed key considerations to ensure applications are harnessing the capabilities of modern parallel architectures. Stewart walked through how Intel is working to improve performance of runtime languages such as Java, .NET, Python, PHP, Go, etc., including some tips and tricks for developers to evaluate their own application performance.

Next, developers had the opportunity for hands-on hacking. Yoko Hyakuna, Curriculum Developer at Apcera, introduced the Apcera Platform and walked participants through setting-up and securely deploying applications in the cloud.

The final session of the day was an interactive panel discussion, where industry experts shared key insight into how companies can stay ahead of the curve by reimagining their products and services. They explored the future of the modern enterprise and shared best practices for enterprise development. Participants included: Hans Haenlein, Director of Innovation, Ericsson; Neha Sampat, CEO, Built.io; David Stewart, Software Engineering Manager, Intel; Will Ochandarena, Director of Product Management, MapR Technologies; Stephen Leonard, Senior Enterprise Solutions Manager, BlackBerry.
