Statement From the Developers Alliance on Google’s Response to the European Commission
Brussels, BE — Developers Alliance President and CEO Jake Ward released the following statement regarding Google’s response to the ongoing European Commission competition investigation into the Android operating system.
“The rise and rapid growth of the mobile application market has provided more opportunity and spurred more entrepreneurial growth than any innovation in generations. The Android operating system has been a catalyst for developer choice and consumer service; offering more than 2.2 million apps available to European consumers today, at the swipe of a thumb. The driving force behind this innovation has been and continues to be competition.
“The health of this new and dynamic market is reflected in its growth, evolving business models, and in the choices it offers consumers, publishers, and developers alike. On behalf of the tens of thousands of members of the Developers Alliance throughout the world, we urge the Commission to remember that the mobile application industry is unlike any we have seen, interconnected, interdependent, and without boundaries of scale or geography. Now is not the time impose limits or halt progress. Please do not reverse years of progress.”
The Developers Alliance recently opined in the EUObserver, EU case against Google is bad for developers and released its Global Competition Report that found that 97% of developers in Europe say the app industry is competitive and 80% describe the industry as “very competitive” and plan to release data on European app consumer habits on Monday, November 14.
